The Virgin of Loreto and the Saints Sebastian, Lorenzo, Stefano, and Carlo Borromeo

Home / artworks / The Virgin of Loreto and the Saints Sebastian, Lorenzo, Stefano, and Carlo Borromeo

Oil on canvas dated 1616 within a contemporary wooden frame; restored in 1989.

It was part of the altar of San Stefano erected by the Bonacchi family in the church of San Bartolomeo. It is a typical example of Counter-Reformation altarpiece with saints in devout contemplation of the Virgin transported by angels. The Bolognese influence on the work is evident in the clarity of the compositional structure derived from the models of Ludovico Carracci and Calvaert. Interesting is the relationship between the archaic frontality of the Marian icon and the lively attitude of the characters: declamatory is Saint Stephen, affectionate and devout is Saint Lawrence, immersed in the clear luminosity of the space.
